If you are interested in joining us, see our home page for our contact e-mail address. What do we do?We meet every second or third Sunday for a variety of tasks in roughly a ten-mile radius of Sale and Altrincham, thereby covering a range of sites mostly in south Manchester and Cheshire. Occasionally work is further afield. The type of work is varied and includes fencing, tree-planting (and sometimes thinning), making and repairing footpaths and steps, clearing and improving ponds for wildlife, scrub clearance - and traditional rural crafts such as coppicing and hedgelaying, not so widely practised these days but making a comeback as more farmers and landowners realise the need to create a better balance between "profitable" land use and the preservation of "unprofitable" wildlife habitats (often mutually beneficial). Back to TopWhy do we do it?We enjoy fresh air, exercise and meeting new people. We get a lot of satisfaction from doing practical environmental conservation work which, because of the prohibitive cost of employing professional labour, wouldn't otherwise necessarily get done. Back to TopWhy not join us?If you enjoy being out in the fresh air, in pleasant surroundings, don't mind getting a bit dirty, like the idea of meeting people and doing some tremendously useful and rewarding work at the same time, then conservation work is what you are looking for. You don't have to be super-fit, and don't need any previous experience - just willingness to work and a sense of humour! Why not try it? There is no member's fee (although any voluntary donation will be gratefully received the Hon. Treasurer!). Anyone over 5 years old can come to tasks, but anyone between 5 and 16 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult. People under 16 will not be able to go on residential weekends (but may attend these as day visitors if accompanied by a parent or responsible adult). Back to TopWe provide...Full instructions at each task; all tools; transport from Altrincham to the site (for those without their own); insurance. Back to TopYou need...Suitable clothing (old working clothes, strong footwear - safety footwear is recommended - and a waterproof coat); a drink and a packed lunch; and enthusiasm!
